Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just resigns itself to fate, opting for laughter as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a website sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

The tsunami struck suddenly, ravaging entire cities in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the chaos that erupted was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath wreckage, their fate uncertain. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to grapple a future forever changed.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for work.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
